Teach yourself VoIP

What is VoIP? The acronym stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. Voice can be transmitted over a simple internet network in the same fashion that data is moved while browsing the web. Your telephone now becomes a part of your existing network and allows you to make calls using the internet. More information on VoIP can be found here.

History of VoIP? VoIP was conceptualized in the early 90s and it allowed PC users to avoid long distance charges. It was in 1995 that the first Internet Phone Software appeared. However, hardware costs and bandwidth limitations did not make it a very attractive alternative. Users were required to have computers equipped with sound cards and high bandwidth at both ends.

As we saw the fall of hardware costs and the gradual introduction of broadband Ethernet service, greater call clarity and reduced latency were signs that VoIP could be useful and promising.

The breakthrough in VoIP history came when major hardware manufacturers invested in VoIP technology and introduced equipment that was capable of switching. This allowed for a portion of the responsibility of the call to be handled by stand alone device which was less computer dependant.

Since 2000 when hardware started become more affordable, VoIP usage has expanded dramatically. It is a growing trend today for companies to switch to VoIP to save on both long distance and infrastructure costs.

Benefits of VoIP? One of they key benefits of VoIP telephony is the mobility that it brings to your business. Not only are you able to use your phone service from a remote location but you can now manage your entire VoIP system from any internet connection.

Think of it as you carrying your entire phone system with you every time you leave the office. VoIP is the long awaited breath of fresh air for businesses that rely on their phone system to excel in today’s market.

Here are some of the benefits that VoIP can bring to your business:
